Travel scam: travel company owner sentenced to 11 years in Cairo prison

On February 6 2013, officers in the General Directorate of Investigations in Cairo have arrested a man accused of running a fake travel business. Mohammad Attia got sentenced for 11 years after he was found guilty of 14 different fraud and scam charges. Victims told police that Mohammad Attia charged a large fee and promised to get them hired abroad, but he disappeared as soon as he got paid. Read Article

Smuggling tunnels to Egypt to be closed at Rafah crossing due to safety standards

A joint committee of Gaza security forces under Hamas has decided to close smuggling tunnels to Egypt at the Rafah border crossing that do not meet safety standards, according to a weekend report by the Egyptian newspaper Al-Shuruq. The 50 Egyptian pound note/50 piastre note trick is the standard scam in Egypt, not just in Aswan and not just with souq sellers. In Aswan and Luxor it is rife. With years of Egyptology experience, even I was trumped at a shop in a luxury hotel in Cairo. Well aware that the 50 pound note was red and the 50 piastre green, I put my purchases on the counter.
